San Marcos' first hotel on the river, Melrose River Club, opened its doors to guests April 1.

The boutique hotel is locally owned by husband and wife Max and Melodie Schleder. Max Schleder said Melrose River Club fills a much-needed hospitality gap in San Marcos.

"All we have are chain hotels. This is extraordinarily unique," Max Schleder said. "It's unique, it's private. It's authentic. It's one of a kind, and I can't stress enough, it's the only hotel on the river."

The details

The camp-style hotel is set on 12 acres by the San Marcos River, right off Hwy. 80.

There are 30 home-style cabins on-site, and 17 have been renovated and are open for reservations. Max Schleder said all 30 will be ready by May 1, and there will be 50 beds available by mid-summer.

Potential guests can choose from two private cabin options: classic or luxe. Each cabin has a max occupancy of two people and features a queen-size bed, walk-in shower, living area and kitchenette equipped with a refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave. Luxe cabins are located closer to the river and have private decks.

What else

Melrose River Club also has a pool with cabanas and lounge chairs, a bar, a bocce ball court, firepits, and a pavilion for meetings and events.

The hotel serves coffee and breakfast in an outdoor seating area near the main lobby. The Schleders said that eventually they would like to get food trucks on the property.

Melodie Schleder said they are glad to finally offer their six-month-long "labor of love" to locals and travelers alike.

"I think we're going to offer a really unique experience for them out here," Melodie Schleder said. "We want to embrace the community, and we want them to embrace us."
