It was still dark out on the morning of March 30 when residents of Kyle waited outside for the doors to open at the new Costco Wholesale store at 19086 S. I-35, Kyle. It has been more than a year and a half since the city of Kyle and Hays County were able to secure Costco with the help of economic incentives.

"This is an incredible moment for our community. We welcome a well-known and respected business that is synonymous with quality products and services," said Alex Villalobos, Hays County judge chief of staff.. "The opening of this store is not only a significant milestone for Hays County residents, but the region."

The new store is expected to attract shoppers throughout the region and employees as well.

"We can confidently welcome Costco to our community knowing that they treat their employees right. This is great news for those who have felt the challenges to find work and have been seeking quality employment opportunities in our region," Villalobos said.

Of the 230 new employees at Costco, around 130 of them are local to the area, according to the store's general manager, Mike Cox.

Mayor Travis Mitchell joined Villalobos in speaking and thanked Kyle City Council, Hays County Commissioners Court and the Greater San Marcos Partnership for all collaborative efforts to secure this milestone.

"I couldn't be happier to open these doors and to let folks go in and see all the great things that are inside," Mitchell said.

Cox closed out the speeches.

"I just want to tell you all how excited Costco is to be here and be part of this phenomenal city," Cox said. "I will be here every day, so come on by and say 'hi,'" Cox said.

Residents in the area will no longer have to travel to Selma or Austin for access to all of Costco's offerings. The new store is outfitted with a gas station, optometry services, a food court and more.
