After a nearly year-long process, Hays CISD board of trustees approved Fuentes Elementary School becoming a fine arts-focused campus Monday night.

During the Hays CISD board of trustees meeting on April 16, Fuentes Elementary School Principal Regina Butcher presented what would be needed for the 632 students currently enrolled at Fuentes to have a curriculum with emphasis on fine arts.

According to the proposal, a new full-time fine arts coordinator/teacher will need to be hired; $20,000 will have to be set aside for equipment and supplies and hourly pay for fine arts partners each year; performing and fine art classes will have to be aligned with the currently offered middle and high school programs; and 30 minutes will be allotted to fine art classes on Mondays and Fridays for each grade level during one fit level period.

It was originally planned that students and teachers would be able to transfer to Fuentes if they wanted to be part of the fine arts program after the inaugural year of the program.

However, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools Alejandro Gongora said his team would first reach out to the district's parents with children in kindergarten-fourth grade to see how many would like to transfer to Fuentes as well as conduct a districtwide survey to better understand the interest in the program.

Butcher also opened dialogue between district teachers and human resources for those who would like to transfer in or out.
