Segments 2 and 3 of Kenney Fort Boulevard are near completion after Round Rock City Council approved an amendment to the construction contract for the roadway at its Nov. 21 meeting.

The current situation

Segments 2 and 3 encompass the stretch of road from Forest Creek Drive to SH 45 on the east side of Round Rock. The road project is now complete, except for paving, striping and a traffic signal at the Gattis School Drive intersection, according to Director of Public Works Michael Thane.

“It's been a long project [with] lots of challenges, but we are right there at the finish line," Thane said at the meeting.

The change order—the ninth for the project—adjusts the city’s contract with JD Abrams to account for material and labor, totaling an approximate $408,000. With City Council's approval, it brings the total contract to $26.9 million.

Some context

When complete, the full Kenney Fort Boulevard extension will one day connect Pflugerville, Round Rock and Georgetown, offering an alternative to I-35.

Round Rock most recently completed Kenney Fort Boulevard segment 4 from Old Settlers Boulevard to Joe DiMaggio Boulevard, which opened in June. Segment 1 concluded in 2013, and Segments 5 and 6 are in the planning stage, with the designs being developed.
