The city of Round Rock and Austin Metro have numerous transportation projects taking place or wrapping up. Check out the four transportation updates below.

1. $3.5 million in street maintenance coming to Round Rock

Round Rock City Council approved $3.5 million in funding Oct. 24 for the 2023 arterial street maintenance program with a contract with Cutler Repaving.

The update

City Council approved the contract with Cutler Repaving, Inc. for nine arterial roads at its meeting Oct. 24. The road work will improve segments of Creek Bend Boulevard, Bass Pro Drive, Smyers Lane, Mays Street, Deep Wood Drive, Hidden Valley Drive, Bowman Road, Tiger Trail and Chandler Creek Trail.


This maintenance involves removing a layer of old asphalt to replace it with fresh surfacing, along with repairing damaged pavement, curbs, sidewalks and driveway approaches where needed. Thane said that the maintenance should provide seven to 10 years of longevity for the roadways once completed.

2. Heritage Trail West spiral ramp now open in Round Rock

A spiral ramp that connects the lower and upper parts of Heritage Trail West is now open for public use.


What is it?

The ramp, which overlooks memorial park, is a part of the ongoing Heritage Trail West project, a 1-mile addition to the Brushy Creek Trail system, which will link the west side of Round Rock to the city’s downtown.

3. Buckle up Austinites: TxDOT breaks ground on next decade of construction along I-35


State and local transportation officials gathered atop a downtown Austin parking garage Oct. 30, taking peeks over its parapet to survey the unbroken line of traffic snaking along I-35 below.

Overview

The steady hum of cars blended with the smooth notes of a jazz band, setting the stage for Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, leaders' celebration of the first milestone in Austin’s "transformational" interstate project. 4. Austin airport receives over $33M in federal funding for new terminal

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport officials announced a $33.27 million funding grant from the Federal Aviation Administration in October to support the construction of the airport’s nearly $2 billion Concourse B project.

What we know

The "Journey with AUS" expansion program includes several projects at the airport spread over many years. Those include a new baggage handling system, facilities and passenger gates, various airfield upgrades, and the construction of new taxiways and second concourse.


Concourse B is expected to create at least 20 new airline gates, supporting additional airline operations in order to meet mounting airport demands from the Central Texas community.
