Round Rock residents in the city's northeast have a new I-35 crossing on the horizon. Just under a mile of new roadway connecting Cypress Boulevard and Chisholm Trail Road was approved for a design contract June 22.

What happened: City officials awarded a contract for design and environmental services with Halff Associates Inc. for an extension of Eagle's Nest Street that would connect the existing road across I-35, all the way to Chisholm Trail Road. The $899,644 contract would see the firm create the schematic design and environmental due diligence for a roadway that would intersect with Mays Street near the Chandler Creek bridge as well as the highway.

The big picture: The 0.9-mile connection to the roadway would provide an additional east-west route across I-35, between University Boulevard and Old Settlers Boulevard. It will intersect with Mays Street before reaching the interstate. Both crossings would require the construction of bridges with filled retaining walls, city documents state. This contract cost does not include the construction of the roadway, planned to span four lanes.

What's next: Gary Hudder, Round Rock's transportation department director, said the design and environmental work for the project could take around two years to complete. Once any necessary adjustments are made to the design, the city could move forward with construction.
