About the project
As part of the 2023 voter-approved bond package, Round Rock will renovate the 55,000-square-foot Clay Madsen Recreation Center. The facility, constructed in 2000, will receive large-scale infrastructure maintenance including:
- A locker room remodel
- Expansion of the weight room and multipurpose room
- Expansion of the gymnasium
The initial contract will pay for services to develop a park master plan, including the expansion and remodel, as well as planning for future park development on the property.
Also included in the agreement is a facility assessment of the existing recreation center to identify its rehabilitation needs.
“We know that building is in need of repair,” Amidon said at a July 8 agenda packet briefing. “This is the first step in identifying the needs that we're going to have to do.”
Looking ahead
Following the assessment and the park master plan, city staff will bring back a design for the rehabilitation for City Council approval. If approved, the master plan should be complete in about three months, Amidon said.
Financing from the 2023 bond will cover the rehabilitation. A larger renovation of the property will be considered as a part of future bond items, according to City Manager Brooks Bennett.
“We'll get it back up to snuff as fast as possible, and then put together a long-term plan to present for future work,” Bennett said.
