Round Rock City Council will consider a resolution to deny Atmos Energy Corporation changing its rates within the city. The company filed a letter of intent last month, which showed a proposed base rate increase of about 7.08%, including the cost of gas.

The impact

The increase would raise residential customers' monthly bill by about 9.41%, or almost $8. Commercial, industrial and transportation customers would not see a change.

This is Atmos' first attempt to increase base rates since 2018. Since then, the company has used six temporary rate hikes, or Interim Rates Adjustments.

Some context

In November 2024, Atmos filed the same rate increase request with the Texas Railroad Commission. Because the company filed with the RRC before filing with Round Rock and other cities, the RRC will likely decide on the rate change before the city finishes its review.

"I know they do go to the Railroad Commission when they feel the rates are not fully supported," Deputy Chief Financial Officer Melana Taylor said at a Jan. 7 agenda packet briefing.

The RRC has ultimate authority if a city doesn’t act to suspend or deny rate changes.

What's next?

Atmos' proposed changes would go into effect Jan. 20, which is also the deadline for the city to take action. City Council will vote on the resolution to deny the increase at its meeting Jan. 9.
