Round Rock’s Memorial Park reopened July 20, unveiling the recently renamed Big Boy Hester Family Field. Both are a part of the greater Heritage Trail West project, which is expected to wrap up later this year, according to city officials.

In case you missed it

The city of Round Rock approved a resolution in April to rename the “Bluffs” baseball field in Memorial Park after Gail “Big Boy” Hester. City Council acknowledged his contributions to the city, including helping bring in the Dell Diamond and the Round Rock Express.

Hester also owns Hester’s Automotive, which he opened in 1960. He has a hand in fundraising for local charities through his annual fishing trip and Christmas party, collectively raising over $300,000 for the community.

About the project

The Heritage Trail West project plans to connect historic old town with downtown Round Rock with a one-mile section of trail along the Bushy Creek Regional Trail. From the recently completed bridge structure along Chisholm Trail Road, visitors can view the round rock which the city was named after.

Other features of the project include an overlook along Brushy Creek and improvements to several parks in order to highlight the history of Round Rock and provide new recreational features, according to a city news release.
