In a fireside-chat-style talk with KVUE anchor Bryan Mays, Round Rock Mayor Craig Morgan addressed some possible priorities of a future bond.

While a bond election has not yet been called, previous City Council discussions indicate that a bond election could be called sometime in 2023, a decade after the last bond election in 2013.

Among the priorities discussed by Morgan were additional fire stations to improve response times, a training facility add-on for the city's police department, recreational facilities and trails for the city's growing population.

"We're in the early stages of looking at a potential bond package as we speak," Morgan said.

In the 2022-23 budget year, $70.6 million is dedicated to public safety expenditures, which Morgan said is due to the high priority of public safety among residents.

"That's what they demand, and we will continue to support our public safety officials," Morgan said.

An expansion of amenities including an additional recreation center, trails, multipurpose fields and Round Rock Sports Center courts are also a high priority among residents. Morgan pointed to previous studies of residents who frequently utilize the recreation center and would like to see additional amenities added and expanded.

"Overwhelmingly people want another rec center," Morgan said. "Maybe not like the Clay Madsen, but some form of a rec center."

The council has not officially set priorities of the next bond, but upcoming discussions are expected to include additional details and plans for projects that will be funded in this manner. This does not represent an official commitment of funds.
