A $19 million expansion to the Round Rock Sports Center will also come with an expanded cashless retail experience for visitors of the athletic facility, after city officials approved a contract with Amazon for an expansion to existing services in July.

What you need to know

City documents show the Round Rock City Council approved a $176,182 contract with Amazon.com Services to provide its Just Walk Out technology for a second store within the center, as part of the ongoing expansion to the sports facility July 24.

The project will be funded by the city's sports and community venue tax revenue.

The details

The contract will see the city pay a setup fee of $49,387, with a monthly cost of $2,113.25 to continue using the technology in the second store. A five-year contract for the technology is under consideration. Chad McKenzie, the city's director of sports management and tourism, said the technology also allows for concessions to operate with fewer staff and sell more product.

How we got here

The city first made an agreement to bring the cashless technology to the sports center in May 2024. At a July 24 council meeting, McKenzie said the existing Amazon store in the sports center has generated about $324,000 in sales in its first year.

What's next?

Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed by early 2026.
