Round Rock City Council approved a contract to purchase and install a playground at its meeting Feb. 27. The contract is a part of the larger Old Settlers Park renovations, and would replace the former Joanne Land Playground.

The details

The new playground cost the city $1.87 million and is custom designed by webuildfun Inc.

"We worked really, really hard with [the company] to bring the price of this playground down," Parks Director Rick Atkins said at the meeting. "I will tell you we're going to have the first one of this class in the United States, in our park."

The structure is two to three times larger than the previous Joanne Land Playground, and also includes built-in LED lighting for safety and accessibility, Atkins said. Adjacent to the playground structure will be an section for swings and a "tot" area for younger children.

"This is going to be a show piece for this community for some time," Atkins said.

About the project

Round Rock planned to replace the Joanne Land Playground as part of the overall Old Settlers Park build-out project due to high use from the public, according to a city news release.

"We knew we had to come back with something a little bit better than what we had there," Atkins said at a Feb. 25 agenda packet briefing.

After completion, the complete park build-out will also include:
  • A new recreation center, including an indoor gym, outdoor track and four multipurpose fields
  • Expanding the Rock’N River waterpark for additional water features and parking
  • Constructing a new Lakeview Pavilion with a permanent stage
  • Expanding the Multipurpose Complex with six additional fields
  • Relocating the tennis complex and constructing new tennis and pickleball courts
Along with the Lakeview area, the playground will be in the first phase of the park open to the public estimated by the end of the year, Atkins said.
