Amazon will resume plans for a new warehouse and distribution center in Round Rock, more than a year after the company put the project on pause.

What's happening?

Amazon confirmed to the Greater Round Rock West Neighborhood Association that it will resume plans for a project to bring a new warehouse and distribution center to a property near CR 172 and SH 45 in western Round Rock, per a memo shared with residents of the association. The project had been left on hold since May 2022, when the company deferred building activity to manage cost pressures.

Bradley Dushkin, assistant director of planning and development services for the city of Round Rock, confirmed Oct. 24 that Amazon submitted a new zoning and annexation application the week prior.

It is not yet clear what the timeline looks like for the project as it was in the process of securing entitlements when it was put on hold.

The backstory

Amazon first filed permits for the project with the city of Round Rock in October 2021, detailing plans for a distribution center and warehouse to serve the area.

The application shows that the property located at 2801 CR 172, Round Rock, is the proposed site for a new Amazon warehouse and distribution center. Additional details provided in the application state the structure will be at least 120 feet in height. The property is not located within Round Rock city limits but does lie within the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction.

At a November meeting with residents of nearby neighborhoods, Jessica Breaux, Amazon's manager of economic development, said the facility represents a preliminary $250 million in capital improvements to the property and that construction would not begin for another three to five years.

At the time, she said Amazon officials are seeking to annex the property into the city limits—a mutual goal of the company and city—citing benefits of additional property tax revenue and regulatory oversight.
