The announcement is the second to come from Xiao regarding his resignation. He first announced his intention to resign Aug. 25 following the district's vote to remove the opt-out policy from its mask mandate. Two days later, on Aug. 27, Xiao posted again to the Facebook platform, writing that he would stay on the board "until every kid has the chance to get vaccinated."
The January announcement references the delay of his departure from the board due to the pandemic and indicates that an official statement is forthcoming after a point when Xiao can consult with district staff.
"I am sorry that I continued to be more trouble than worth," Xiao wrote in his post. "I am very grateful that I was given the opportunity to have this incredible learning experience at the board."
Xiao's announcement arrives on the heels of a board vote to conclude its external investigation into Superintendent Hafedh Azaiez and have a report provided to the board prior to its Feb. 17 meeting.
In August, the district confirmed that when a trustee resigns, the board has two options: A replacement could be selected by the board to carry out the remainder of their term, or a special election could be called.
Xiao did not respond to efforts to contact him by Community Impact Newspaper, and this story will be updated as new information becomes available.
