In a Friday announcement, the Texas Department of Transportation  detailed the long-range timeline of construction at FM 3406 and I-35. TxDOT is currently in Phase 1 of the project, working to ultimately reconstruct the bridge.

From now until fall, TxDOT is completing the southbound to northbound U-turn bridge and preparing for the westbound FM 3406 traffic to detour. Starting in the fall, the westbound traffic will detour onto the new U-turn bridge and the FM 3406 bridge will be closed to eastbound traffic. The eastbound traffic will detour south along the I-35 frontage road and make a non-signalized U-turn at US 79.

TxDOT will then work to demolish and reconstruct the FM 3406 bridge. This entire series of actions, encompassed in Phase 2, will take approximately 10 months.

Phase 3 will last two months, weather permitting, and will open the FM 3406 bridge to two-way traffic, including turn lanes. TxDOT will then open the northbound to southbound U-turn bridge and close the southbound to northbound U-turn bridge to remove the temporary westbound detour.

Finally, in spring of 2019, frontage road improvements will be complete and the project will re-open.

All of this construction is shorter than the initially projected timeline, which was initially set for two months longer.

Throughout the process, bridge construction will involve some overnight I-35 main lane closures to set beams and pour concrete.
