Transportation was the theme of the Aug. 9 city council meeting in Pflugerville, with the majority of presentations and topics connected to either the current state of, or future plans for roads and transportation in the city.

Capital Area Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CAMPO) gave a presentation to the council highlighting CAMPO’s function, and programs they administer to help cities ascertain transportation needs and meet their mobility goals.

“One of our goals is to create a bottom up approach to our planning process, really creating a locally driven approach to outcomes that will impact the entire region,” said Kelly Porter, senior multimodal planner with CAMPO.

Capital Metro followed with their own presentation covering the lengthy relationship that the organization has had with the city of Pflugerville. They also spoke of their ongoing efforts to aid the city in solving an ever-growing issue with commuter transportation. Capital Metro continues to work on a plan for a series of park and ride stations throughout Pflugerville.

“Capital Metro is committed to a vision of improved coordinated and connected mobility for Central Texas both within and beyond our service area,” said Todd Hemingson, vice president of planning for Capital Metro.

The council also heard from The Goodman Corporation, an independent company with whom the city contracted with to assess the city’s transportation needs, required funding, and funding sources to meet those needs.

The Goodman Corporation has been working with Capital Metro to review the transportation plan that Capital Metro and their consultant have developed for the city, and determine its viability.

“That plan has thus far failed to identify a program to help the most needy in the community get transportation,” said Barry Goodman. Goodman came forth with several suggestions for the council to consider not only with regard to meeting the council’s goal of developing a plan to address transportation for those most in need, but in building a comprehensive transportation plan for the future.

No decision was made, but the council will continue efforts to assess Pflugerville’s transportation needs and work toward a solution.
