On Jan. 9, Round Rock City Council approved a rezoning request that could help clear the way for additional affordable housing options in the city.

Brad Wiseman, the city’s director of planning and development, presented the rezoning application to council.

Wiseman said the city has received a proposal for 18 duplexes—nine buildings with two units apiece—for a nearly three-acre site near Mays Street and McNeil Road.

“I think it could be a great product,” Round Rock Mayor Craig Morgan said during a Jan. 7 council meeting. “[Duplexes are] another variety of housing stock that we need for affordability.”

The council on Thursday night approved 7-0 the rezoning request from a prior designation as single family to two family zoning. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted 7-0 on Dec. 4 to recommend approval.
