The new Kerlin-Lyerly American Legion Post 154 in Pflugerville installed its first elected officers July 13 at the Pflugerville Public Library.

The new officers hope to continue pursuing community outreach and service projects, Commander Brian Allen said.

Allen said Post 154’s service activities include assisting the Rotary Club, hosting the local Veterans’ Day ceremony, assisting with the junior ROTC program at Hendrickson High School and supporting the Boys State youth civic engagement program.

“Not only do we do community service and [promote] Americanism, we support veterans. We have a service officer that assists the veterans of Pflugerville,” he said. “We’ve got projects that are ongoing and [as new officers] we are going to plan out the next fiscal year. We’ve got a great foundation.”

Post 154 is partly named after Cpl. Alfred Kerlin, who was killed in combat during World War 1. Kerlin’s surviving niece, Waldine Wieruscheske, attended the installation ceremony and presented the Post with a scrapbook memoir of her uncle and his time in the military.

“It gives me pleasure to think that you all chose [my uncle]. It makes me think he is not forgotten,” Wieruscheske said. “This way, his life still goes on, and we’re proud of you all choosing him to be in the title of your American Legion.”

Former commander Ed Zamora was also honored by state and national American Legion officials for his service.
