On Thursday, Pflugerville ISD announced it adjusted its substitute teacher pay structure to include an increase for those individuals with teacher certifications or long-term responsibilities.

The district increased the rate of pay to $95, up from the $85 per day rate from the 2016-17 school year. The daily rate for non-certified substitute teachers is still $85 per day.

PfISD created a new category of substitute teacher for this purpose, called the "resident substitute" category. The district hopes this will help to address occasional shortages of substitute teachers. Resident substitutes will be assigned to a specific campus, but not a specific classroom each day.

If that campus does not have a need for the teacher on a specific day, the substitute can be shuffled to another campus. Those teaching in this category will be paid a daily rate of $105, and must be 21 years of age with a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The long-term substitute position also receives pay of $105 per day, with the chance to increase pay to $120 per day after 11 consecutive days in a classroom.

This is an increase of $15 per day from the 2016-17 school year.

Superintendent Doug Killian said this will help the district maintain a steady pool of teachers.

"These adjustments allow us to create more consistency with our pool of substitute teachers, and it keeps us very competitive with other districts," Killian said in a statement.
