Cases of scratch-made conchas, churros, bunuelos, bolillos, pink cake and empanadas greet customers at Juarez Restaurant & Bakery on Mays Street. The array of bakery items and savory family dishes has made Juarez a mainstay for fans of Mexican cuisine in Round Rock for 24 years.
Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, Amancio Juarez opened the Round Rock restaurant and bakery in 1993, and although there are many options for Mexican food in the area, consistent quality and attention to detail keep bringing customers back, said Amancio’s daughter-in-law and restaurant manager Minerva Juarez.
“The food is so fresh,” Minerva said. “Everything is handmade. And there is so much work that goes into every item, every dish; that attention to detail comes out in the flavor.”
Minerva said the restaurant is truly a family affair. Family members are at the restaurant daily and customers will see familiar faces as some kitchen and wait staff have worked there for years and have inspired menu items. And she said catering to customers’ taste is a priority.
Depending on the region, menudo, a Mexican stew, is with tortillas or bolillo, an oval-shaped roll reminiscent of French bread. Juarez offers it with tortillas or bolillo on request, so their customers can experience an authentic nostalgic dish.
Tamales are popular and can be purchased spicy or mild; by the dozen cold or hot; or as an entree covered in ranchero sauce and cheese and served with refried beans and rice.
Breakfast tacos are made to order with bacon, egg, cheese, chorizo, potatoes or barbacoa. Migas, huevos rancheros and specialty dishes such as the Southwestern Omelet are also available.
And the bakery’s chilled case features chocolate, vanilla and strawberry tres leches cakes that may be purchased whole or by the slice as well as rows of caramel flan.
Customers can dine in or place to-go orders.
