An underutilized patio at the Clay Madsen Recreation Center is getting an upgrade. Between July and October, a 30-by-70-foot metal shade structure, new concrete flooring, a metal shipping container, and cardio and strength training equipment will be added to the outdoor patio. The upgrades are designed to meet the demand for Cross Fit-style workouts, said Rick Atkins, the director of the Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department. “This is probably one of the most underutilized spaces in the Clay Madsen Recreation Center,” Atkins said. Round Rock City Council awarded a $368,032 contract for concrete work and other site improvements to Partners Remodeling, Waterproofing, and Restoration on June 27. The council also awarded a $64,062 contract for a shade structure to The PlayWell Group. “We think the payback on this will be significant in a very short amount of time,” Atkins said. The Clay Madsen improvement project is funded by the city’s 2014 bond and parks department funding.
