At the Hutto City Council meeting Thursday night, the city's Type B Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and council members held a public, joint meeting to discuss economic development strategy moving forward.

In the end, council voted to form a subcommittee consisting of members from both the city council and EDC board. City council drew members' names from a basket at Thursday's meeting and selected Mayor Doug Gaul, Council Member Tom Hines and Council Member Lucio Valdez to the subcommittee. The Type B EDC will select members to represent their board on the subcommittee at the Type B board's next meeting Dec. 4.

The two bodies deliberated for close to an hour Thursday night and covered several topics that they deemed necessary to clarify for prudent economic development. Hutto voters approved a resolution to provide the Hutto Type B EDC with voter-approved sales tax funds moving forward.

The concern of EDC staffing and staffing costs dominated much of the conversation and required clarifications from members of the EDC board, council members, attorney for the city Michael Shaunessy and Hutto City Manager Odis Jones.

But EDC members were eager to coordinate with city council to determine the board's structure and strategy moving forward. EDC board members requested city council Thursday night to generate a "To Do" list and schedule to coordinate strategy.

"We need to understand what structure you need us to move forward in. We’d like to get some direction from council," said Bryon Borchers, EDC board member.

Other discussions during the city council meeting included planning future discussions with the Hutto Area Chamber of Commerce over a potential "strategic partnership" in 2018. Chamber representatives will be at the Type B EDC Dec. 4 meeting.
