The lights will be bigger and brighter at Pflugerville’s 1849 Park.
City Council members on July 25 approved lighting towers in excess of 60 feet and extended the time the lights may be on past 10 p.m. Lighting for soccer and football fields is estimated at $2 million.
The park, being built at 16430 Cameron Road, is being funded as part of a $25 million bond for parks approved by voters in 2014.
A pond for irrigation is ready for 22 acres of new sod for fields scheduled to be placed this week.
Parks and Recreation Director James Hemenes said there will be a cost recovery program in place for the lights, with a charge for time the lights are used.
Hemenes said the fields will be used mostly for soccer practices and for weekend Pop Warner and similar football league games.
According to Hemenes, some tournaments are likely, but beyond the projected 20-hours of practice and games each week, the maintenance and operation costs are higher. Hemenes also said the fields need recovery time in between practices and games.
Two houses are in the area of the fields, but officials said the lights won’t be aimed across property lines.
“We want to be good neighbors,” Hemenes said.
