In the next six weeks, Round Rock will begin installing roughly 75 bus stops throughout the city for the beginning of a fixed-bus route system, which will start operations Aug. 21. Service for the bus route will be provided by Capital Metro with funding from Federal Transit Administration grants and the city of Round Rock. The stops will be for Route 50, which will travel north to the Round Rock Premium Outlets and south to Capital Metro's Howard Lane Park & Ride station in Austin. The route will make stops near Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Round Rock, Austin Community College, various grocery stores, the library, City Hall and other locations. Route 51 will also begin operations and serve as an in-city circulation route. Both routes will operate from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on weekdays and will originate from the Transit Center in downtown Round Rock. "It's great to see tangible progress being made to provide our residents expanded transit services in the near future," Transportation Services Director Gary Hudder said. The first week of bus rides will be free for all riders as the city works to address any issues with the proposed routes. This will be the first time Round Rock has ever used a fixed-route bus system. Tickets will be able to be purchased from the city of Round Rock or from Capital Metro at the same price.
