Craig Morgan said Alan McGraw’s nine years as mayor will be a hard act to follow, but he is excited the citizens gave him the opportunity.

Morgan won Saturday’s election to become the city’s next mayor with 3,696 votes for 51.66 percent. Hilda Montgomery had 3,094 votes and Josh Couture had 364. Couture is a senior at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock.

McGraw, who served the city for nine years as mayor, chose not to run for re-election.

As results came in Saturday evening, Morgan spent time with family, friends and supporters watching returns.

“I was honored and humbled to be elected as Round Rock’s next mayor,” said Morgan, who served the City Council last term in Place 1. “We have been so fortunate to have good mayors throughout the years.”

Morgan said the campaign trail led to many meetings with residents “really happy with where the city is headed. We should as leaders always look for ways to be better and we will continue to do that under my leadership.”

The newly elected mayor said he looks forward to working with fellow city council members and new Place 1 representative Tammy Young on the strategic plan, while continuing to provide services the citizens expect in the most cost-effective way.

Morgan also took the time to thank his opponents.

“I want to commend Hilda Montgomery and her supporters on the campaign she ran,” Morgan said. “She worked hard, and she is to be commended for a job well done. Additionally, I want to thank Josh Couture for engaging the young citizens of our city. Any time our youth are involved in the process, it is a good thing. They are our future leaders. This was my third contested race and by far the hardest. However, I hope it has made me a better council member and will make me a better mayor as I take that role on.”
