Hutto ISD announced Thursday William Edwards will serve as the district's chief of police.

Edwards, who will begin his duties March 20, came to the district from Pflugerville ISD and the Pflugerville Police Department. Hutto ISD has been operating this school year under an interim structure where city of Hutto Police Chief Earl Morrison oversaw both departments.

“I am very excited to be a member of the Hippo Nation and serve the Hutto community,” Edwards said. “Serving an ISD police department is much different from a municipal department. We have a chance to make a significant difference in the lives of young people, and we have an opportunity to help redirect kids headed down a wrong path before it’s too late.”

Edwards joined the Pflugerville Police Department in 1996. In 2008 he was selected as the chief of police for the newly formed Pflugerville ISD Police Department, a position he held through August 2016. As the agency’s first police chief, Edwards grew the Pflugerville ISD PD from its inception to a 23-person department.

“I have enjoyed my 10 years doing police work in a school district. Hutto is booming, and this is a great opportunity to be part of a school district that continues to distinguish itself in both Central Texas and the state,” Edwards said. “Being next door in Pflugerville, I’ve seen the great things happening in Hutto ISD, and I look forward to working with the outstanding administration and being part of a great team.”

Edwards has more than  4,600 law enforcement training hours and holds eight proficiency certificates with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy class 245 and has a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration/organizational leadership.

“We are thrilled to get a leader the caliber of Chief Edwards,” Hutto ISD Superintendent Doug Killian said. “His reputation in the area is outstanding, and we look forward to having him serve the Hippo Nation and our students and staff.

“I am very thankful to Chief Earl Morrison, the Hutto Police Department and the City of Hutto for working with us during this interim period. We look forward to continued collaboration between the two police departments. Chief Morrison has helped build a bond between the city and district officers, and together they will continue keeping our students, staff and community members safe.”

Currently, the Hutto ISD Police Department has three officers and a corporal. They also have two Hutto Police Department officers that will transition back to the city police department.
