Pflugerville voters decided to change the composition of the city council when they voted for
Proposition 1 in the Nov. 8 election.
Passage of Proposition 1 did two things - it gave the mayor a vote on agenda items, and it added another seat to the city council, bringing the number of council members to six. But how the council would go about filling the newly-created slot was not clear, until the Pflugerville City Council took action on the matter during its regular meeting Tuesday night.
According to Pflugerville City Attorney George Hyde, the council could appoint a person to fill the vacancy, choose to call a special election or wait until a scheduled election for voters to select the sixth council member.
The council unanimously decided to wait until the Nov. 2017 regular election to put the vacancy on the ballot. By doing so, the council avoids spending taxpayer dollars on a special election, and it allows whomever is elected in November to serve a full term.
