Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Pflugerville is the recipient of the 2020 TrueNorth Award for its nursing certification efforts, as announced in a Feb. 24 company news release. The recognition was awarded by the Competenecy & Credentialing Institute, an internationally recognized nursing certification board, per the release.

The award is given to medical facilities "whose 'true north guides the nursing staff to be life long learners, models of excellent practice and continuous advocates for superb patient care," per the release. Winners are selected following a competitive application process that takes into account certification rates and the influence certified nurses have on patient safety, among other qualifications.

Members of Pflugerville's nursing staff were presented with the award in a Feb. 21 news conference. Sally Gillam—regional vice president and chief nursing officer of the Austin-Round Rock region for BSW Health—spoke Feb. 21 and referred to Pflugerville's 100% certified perioperative, or operating room, nursing staff as an example of continuous commitment to patient safety.

"Pflugerville has a very special nursing population," Gillam said Feb. 21. "The nurses are very much a team; they work together; they manage each other up; they don’t let anybody have a bad day; and they put patients first."

Amy Wilkins, director of nursing at BSW-Pflugerville, said Feb. 21 the recognition was "symbolic" of her staff's dedication to the Pflugerville community and its efforts to maximize patient care.

"We are just so proud of them, and I think it’s a spark to continue the fantastic care that we deliver to the general public every single day," Wilkins said, adding: "They are taking care of the community because they are part of this community."

BSW-Pflugerville is located at 2600 E. Pflugerville Parkway, Ste. 100.
