Hutto ISD will cancel classes and all other operations on Thursday, Feb. 3, in anticipation of dangerous conditions due to forecast winter weather.

The district on Feb. 1 issued a message on its website from Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas stating HISD could remain closed through Friday, Feb. 4, depending on conditions.

The message states district officials will continue to monitor weather conditions in coordination with city and county emergency management officials and will announce a return date by Thursday afternoon.

"We encourage everyone to stay home and stay off the roadways," the message states. "The temperatures in the upcoming days will be bitterly cold."

Information from the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office states chances are increasing that a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet will occur across portions of South Central Texas by Thursday morning and continue possibly into the afternoon.

The NWS is also predicting up to a quarter-inch of ice on Thursday, and there is a "medium to high confidence" that freezing rain and sleet could impact travel into the Austin metro area by Thursday morning and continue through the day.

Thomas said via the district statement the closure could cause a deficit in required instructional time that may have to be made up, and HISD will inform staff, parents and students when more information is available.
