At least three members of Hutto City Council, including Mayor Mike Snyder, requested a new budget proposal using a no-new-revenue tax rate during a special budget meeting Aug. 8.
The request comes after City Manager James Earp presented a budget proposal with a 12.83% increase in tax rates Aug. 1.
How it happened
During the special meeting Aug. 8, Snyder read a statement on behalf of himself, Place 5 City Council member Evan Porterfield and Place 2 City Council member Dan Thornton, acknowledging their intent to vote for the no-new-revenue tax rate rather than the proposed rate. To pass a tax rate increase, at least five council members would have to vote in favor.
Forgoing an increase in the tax rate necessitates a new budget proposal, which council members requested from Earp by this week.
Looking forward
Council members will hold another meeting Aug. 15 to discuss the tax rate, take a vote and schedule a public hearing on the proposed rate. It is also the last day for the city manager to submit a proposal to City Council.
There will be time for public comment at the upcoming meeting, and residents can access budget and tax information on the city of Hutto’s budget page.
