Nonprofit organization Keep Texas Beautiful awarded the city of Pflugerville a share of $25,000 to go toward educational opportunities relating to sustainability, recycling, litter prevention, beautification and water conservation. The funding helped the city launch a new Adopt-A-Creek program in January.

The details

The Adopt-A-Creek program encourages community members to take an active role in the beautification of the parks and trails system, allowing participants to adopt sections of creeks.

As part of the program, participants perform cleanup activities once every quarter for two years. They then submit reports detailing their efforts and creek inspections to the city.

The Pflugerville Parks and Recreation Department will recognize the commitment of each group by placing a sign along the adopted creek or area displaying the partnering group’s name.

“Keep Pflugerville Beautiful is excited to receive this grant to help us launch this new Adopt-A-Creek program,” said Timothy Ward, Pflugerville Parks and Recreation program supervisor, in a news release. “This program will identify new adoptable sections of Gilleland Creek, from Immanuel Road to Grand Avenue Parkway, and allow members of the community to sponsor these sections to help protect and improve this valuable resource.”

What residents should know

Creek assignments will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Maintenance tasks will involve picking up litter and removing debris, which might entail wading into the water.
