Here are three updates to know from the Oct. 17 Pflugerville ISD board of trustees meeting as part of the district's monthly administration report.

Austin Community College enrollment up

ACC launched its four-year free tuition pilot program this fall and more than 335 Pflugerville graduates went on to attend this semester—up 25% from last year, per the administration report.

Per ACC officials, students who graduated from a public, private or home school in ACC’s service area between spring 2024 and 2028, or earned a GED between July 2023 and August 2028, are eligible to apply for the pilot program.

The pilot program:
  • Covers tuition and general fees, so students can apply for additional financial support for expenses such as housing or child care
  • Does not cover non-residents, international students, course-specific fees, textbooks or continuing education programs
Strategic plan task force kicks off

The first meeting of the PfISD strategic plan task force was held Oct. 24. The task force, consisting of board members, district staff, parents and other community members, will create a draft of the strategic plan to present to the board in the spring.

The task force will utilize information collected from the online community thought exchange—part of Superintendent Quintin Shepherd's 100 day entry plan—to create the draft.

Thousands of participants had submitted or interacted with thoughts on the exchange by early September. Key items mentioned included safety concerns, the need for more special education support, communication gaps and teacher pay and retention.

While committee members have already been selected, Shepherd said the community is welcome to attend meetings as spectators. All meetings will be held at 6 p.m. at the PfISD administration building.

Teacher housing on the horizon

The district has received survey results for its teacher housing initiative and are reviewing the responses, per the administration report. Results have already indicated an increased need for teacher housing compared to the 2023 survey.

Voters approved $43.9 million in funds from the 2022 bond to finance the purchase of property and construction of a workforce housing development for teachers, as previously reported by Community Impact.

According to the report, the district is working on a proposed site across from Pflugerville Stadium for the development while reviewing additional district-owned sites as alternatives, and is slated to work with the city to adjust the limits on zoning requirements.
