Hutto ISD officials will soon vote on the hiring of their finalist for superintendent, following a mandatory 21-day waiting period.

What's happening

HISD officials have called a special meeting to vote on the hiring of Raul Pena, the finalist in the search for a new superintendent. The vote comes at the end of a 21-day waiting period mandated by state law for the hiring of superintendents. Should the board vote to hire him, his first day as HISD's superintendent would be Sept. 1.

How we got here

In May, HISD Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas announced her retirement, prompting a superintendent search guided by community involvement. She was first hired in 2017, seeing the district through a period of high growth and the COVID-19 pandemic.
