Construction for the Colorado River pump station and waterline will begin in the coming months following City Council approval of three separate developer contracts Oct. 22.

These agreements are “a great milestone” for the project, Pflugerville Assistant City Engineer Jeff Dunsworth said.

About the projects

The first contract, with Thalle Construction Company, Inc., will expand the raw water pump station at the lower Colorado River, helping maintain water levels in Lake Pflugerville as well as water quality. In addition to upgrading the three existing pumps, the project includes an additional fourth pump.

The Colorado River waterline, spanning from Austin to Lake Pflugerville, will be constructed in two separate projects. S.J. Louis Construction of Texas will construct the approximately 10-mile portion of the waterline within Austin. A third contractor, BELT Construction of Texas, will construct the five-mile portion of the waterline that is within the city of Pflugerville.

The waterline and pump station expansion will help sustain population growth as water demand increases, Dunsworth said. The collective cost of the projects is about $104 million.

The timeline

Pflugerville has secured the necessary permitting for each project. Construction on the pump station will begin this month and is slated to wrap up in February 2026. The two portions of the waterline are also expected to begin construction next month and wrap up in May 2026.

What they’re saying

Dunsworth noted that it is “critical” to use three separate contractors to minimize the city’s risk in navigating regulatory hurdles.
