In 2022, Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2 saw a sharp increase in wild and brush fires from the previous year.
The backstory
For July 4 alone, the district had a 142% increase in call volume that included responses to grass, trash and structure fires, according to a news release from ESD 2.
The specifics
As July 4 approaches, ESD 2 fire Chief Nicholas Perkins issued several tips to safely enjoy the holiday.
- Before the holiday, make a point to discuss fireworks safety with everyone in the family to decrease the chance of someone getting hurt.
- Insist on adult supervision whenever fireworks are being lit, even for older kids. Children ages 10-14 have the highest fireworks-related injury rate of any age.
- Alcohol and fireworks don't mix. Make sure fireworks are used under competent and sober adult supervision.
- Fireworks are poisonous to pets. Be sure not to leave behind any used fireworks where pets spend time.
- Only light fireworks outside on a flat surface that’s far from any homes or buildings.
- Don’t light fireworks near dry grass or leaves.
- Never lean over fireworks when lighting them.
- Soak fireworks in water before throwing them in the trash.
