Backpack Friends, a nonprofit that provides packages to food-insecure students to last them through the weekend, is celebrating five years in operation in July.

Husband and wife Tom and Heather Cottar launched the organization in July 2018, and what started as an operation that provided weekend meal kits for 12 students at one Pflugerville ISD campus now sends more than 85,000 meal kits to students at schools in Burnett, Travis and Williamson counties. The nonprofit is located at 700 W. Pecan St., Ste. C, Pflugerville.
