The Pflugerville ISD Board of Trustees approved the school district’s calendar for the 2018-19 academic year at its regular meeting March 22.
A district’s ability to set its own academic calendar is one of several exemptions from the Texas Education Code that are allowed when a district votes to become a District of Innovation.
PfISD voted to become a DOI on March 1 following a yearlong process of gathering input from staff and members of the community. The 2018-19 school year marks the first year that PfISD will have its own customized academic calendar.
The first day of the school year for students will be Aug.16 and the last day will be May 30, 2019.
The last day before Christmas break will be Dec. 22 and students will return on Jan. 7, 2019.
The Christmas break was scheduled to more closely align with surrounding school districts and potentially aid staff whose children attend schools in neighboring districts.
The calendar was formed with input from the District Academic Advisory Committee made up of teachers, parents and community members. Surveys with details of proposed calendars were also sent out to additional teachers, parents and students.
Some parents, teachers and students suggested moving spring break to the second week of March to align with the South by Southwest Concert & Festivals. This recommendation was ultimately not included in the calendar approved by the DAAC and the board of trustees.
