Big decisions made in 2016

  • School boundaries change
Trustees approved boundary changes to Cedar Valley, Chisholm Trail, Deerpark, Grisham and Walsh middle schools to accommodate the future Pearson Ranch Middle School opening in August.

  • New high school
RRISD’s sixth high school will be built on Pearson Ranch Road in Austin. Construction on the 481,515-square-foot facility could begin in August, pending approval of a bond.

  • District of innovation
Trustees approved a DOI plan in October that clears the way for RRISD to exempt itself from provisions in the Texas Education Code.

Top issues for 2017

  • Possible bond
Trustees have until Feb. 17 to call a bond election in May, which could include funding for a new high school and indoor swim center.

  • More growth
RRISD will likely face additional attendance boundary decisions because of the new high school and an anticipated 12th middle school in the works.

  • DOI compliance
The Texas State Teachers Association has challenged RRISD’s District of Innovation plan on grounds the plan violates state education codes.
