These investments include efforts to accelerate manufacturing, bridge gaps in the silicon supply chain and expand facilities, according to a news release.
“Today, we’re proud to increase our investments across the United States to $600 billion over four years and launch our new American Manufacturing Program,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the news release.
The details
The American Manufacturing Program seeks to increase U.S. manufacturing through a partnership with 10 companies nationwide, including Applied Materials, Samsung and Texas Instruments.
The new program aims to help Apple create an end-to-end supply chain for silicon in the U.S. Some local partnerships for this include Applied Materials in Northeast Austin, which Apple has partnered with to boost semiconductor manufacturing equipment production.
Apple will also work with Samsung at its Austin fabrication plant to launch a new technology for chip making, according to the news release. The new process is intended to increase power and performance for Apple products.
“We want America to lead in this critical industry, and we’re expanding our efforts to grow a silicon manufacturing ecosystem that will benefit innovators across America,” Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Sabih Khan said in the news release.
What else?
Beyond partnerships, Apple is also still building its second $1 billion Austin campus, according to the news release. Investment in the second site was initially announced in 2018, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The new site will include a research and development lab for Apple’s Hardware Engineering, Hardware Technology, and Software Engineering teams, the news release states.
