Officials from Concordia University Texas, located off RM 620 near the Austin and Cedar Park border, on Feb. 5 will break ground on construction of a new residence hall. The upcoming building will be the third residence hall on the private university’s campus.
Shortly after school officials break ground on the new residence hall, Concordia will celebrate the opening of its newest facility. On Feb. 9, Concordia will host a virtual grand opening of its Austin Nursing Satellite Campus, the newest offering from its College of Health Sciences. The new nursing facility is located off campus, near the intersection of US 183 and Loop 360 in Northwest Austin.
RESIDENCE HALL
Concordia will open its upcoming residence hall to students in August 2022, according to a news release from the university.
The new four-story dorm building will almost double the size of Concordia’s housing units, the university said in its news release, and eliminate an annual waiting list for residence requests.
Study areas and learning spaces equipped with technology will be built on each floor in the new residence hall. Outside the building, the university has included an amphitheater in its designs as a space to host university events as well as an open space for studying and socializing among students.
In its news release, Concordia states the residence hall is being developed under environmental guidelines to protect an adjacent nature preserve on campus.
NURSING SCHOOL EXPANSION
At the beginning of its fall 2020 semester in August, Concordia opened its newest learning facility—the Austin Nursing Satellite Campus. This 17,000-square-foot lab, located at Echelon 1, Ste. 300, 9430 Research Blvd., Austin, is equipped with 10 beds for clinical skills labs, a student lounge, and offices for administration and faculty.
Students may begin using these new skills and simulation labs in courses when they are juniors and seniors, according to university officials.
More than 400 nursing students participated in clinicals during Concordia's fall 2020 semester, Jason Shuffitt, dean of the College of Health Sciences, told Community Impact Newspaper in December.
Now, after welcoming 288 new students in the fall, Concordia’s 2020-21 nursing enrollment is the largest it has ever been in the program’s history, according to a news release from the university.
Concordia is hosting a grand opening of this new facility online for prospective students. That virtual tour can be accessed online here or on the university’s YouTube channel Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
