This is the first countywide PIT count in Williamson County since 2011, according to a press release by San Antonio-based Endeavors, an organization that serves vulnerable populations.
Endeavors is the lead agency performing the PIT count and is working alongside the WilCo Homeless Coalition and the Texas Homeless Network, according to the release.
The count will include people in unsheltered locations such as cars, parks, streets and sidewalks, as well as those in emergency shelters and transitional housing, according to the release.
A PIT count is necessary to apply for federal funding for homelessness initiatives, and it is used for planning and policy-making purposes, leaders with Endeavors and the WilCo Homeless Coalition said in an email. Additionally, local organizations use the count as an opportunity to connect people experiencing homelessness to housing and other vital services.
Results from the PIT count are expected to be published in April.
