Austin City Council will consider options for a
mobility bond June 1, and Mayor Steve Alder is suggesting the council focus on plans for turning old state highways, such as Guadalupe Street, North Lamar Boulevard and Riverside Drive into "smart corridors" with increased housing density and transportation improvements.
Prioritizing the "smart corridors" through initiatives that include the addition of traffic lights, the creation of protected bike paths and the increase of housing options could reduce traffic congestion and lead to more affordable housing for Austin residents, according to a statement Adler released May 26.
“The corridor plans have already been done. Each plan has had extensive public input. We’ve spent millions of dollars on them, and they’re sitting on a shelf. We need to take the plans off the shelf and do the work. To help with congestion alone, we need to do this work,” Adler said in a statement. “But the benefit of doing these projects is that they are, also, perhaps the most meaningful thing we could do to address affordability in this city."
