Just in time for the June heat wave,
SPUN Ice Cream has found a new permanent Domain home on the outdoor patio at Whole Foods Market.
The ice cream shop opened June 7 in a shipping container located at 11920 Domain Drive, Austin.
SPUN offers three flavors, including a dairy-free option. Ice cream is made-to-order and starts out in liquid form. It is spun in a KitchenAid mixer with liquid nitrogen, co-founder Ashley Cheng said. This method also helps give the dairy-free option a velvety smoothness that mimics real ice cream, she said.

“Because of this process, it helps create that rich creaminess,” Ashley said. “It’s hard to get that with traditional methods.”
She co-owns the business with her sister, Christina, who is a trained pastry chef. SPUN also makes its own toppings, such as handcut sprinkles, shortbread crumble, waffle cones and a salted chocolate shell.
The two sisters threw out the idea to Whole Foods to be located on the grocer’s property.
“Whole Foods does a great job of supporting local businesses,” Ashley said. “There’s a good family friendly fun vibe at this location.”
The Chengs grew up in West Austin and started SPUN Ice Cream in December 2015 in East Austin. They later opened a Domain location in
a food truck in November. The truck will now be used for events, Ashley said.
Part of the joy of owning an ice cream shop, Ashley said, is getting to be a part of making memories for customers.
“That’s what makes it so fun,” she said. “It is a special treat … It’s cool to create that for people.”
