Just weeks after Austin City Council gave its support to bring Major League Soccer to the city, a supporters group is unveiling a new logo and brand this Saturday, Sept. 29.

MLS in Austin announced Wednesday its new name is the Austin Anthem, and the group will meet Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at Jack & Ginger’s Irish Pub in Domain Northside, 11500-B Rock Rose Ave., Austin, to announce the new logo and brand.

“We’re really excited about the growth and have had a lot of positive response,” said Jeremiah Bentley, a member and volunteer with the nonprofit. “We think there’s a lot of excitement and a lot of people want to see if [MLS] is really a thing.”

On Aug. 15, council authorized city staff to negotiate and execute a stadium and lease agreement at McKalla Place in North Austin with Precourt Sports Ventures, the investor-operator group of the MLS team Columbus Crew SC.

MLS in Austin dates back to 2013, years before PSV showed interest in Austin. The group got its start with about 20 men bonding over their love of soccer in a bar, Bentley said.

The group’s membership has now grown to about 1,000, and more than 300 supporters showed up to council’s late June meeting to speak in favor of bringing an MLS team to Austin, said Bentley, a Northwest Austin resident who got involved last year after news broke about PSV wanting to bring the Columbus Crew team to Austin.

On Saturday, fans will not only be rallying together but will also have an opportunity to become more involved in the group, he said.

“The intent of the meeting on Saturday is to try to get people actively engaged in the group, from social media to community outreach,” Bentley said.

The first 150 supporters will receive an Austin Anthem T-shirt, and officials from the group will speak around 5 p.m.
