1. ‘Newsies’

Through Oct. 2, the Texas Performing Arts presents the Broadway musical inspired by the real-life newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City. It is directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. Performances are at Bass Concert Hall, 2350 Robert Dedman Drive, Austin, and start at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Tickets start at $25. 2. Domain Northside debut

Domain Northside, the newest phase at The Domain, celebrates the opening of several stores Friday and Saturday. Events begin at 8 a.m. Friday with Nordstrom’s Beauty Bash and a balloon release at 10 a.m. on the Northside Lawn. From 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., activities include sidewalk chalk artists, balloon twisters, face painters and kite building. Storytellers and puppet shows take place between 11 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. A public art installation will also be revealed Friday on the Lawn. The sculpture was created by Flying Carpet Creative.

On Saturday more activities take place from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Live music performances start at 1 p.m. with shows by Mayeaux & Broussard, The Austin, 80H Project and Tameca Jones. Sprinkles Cupcakes will provide samples between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and SoulCycle will do demonstrations at 2:30 p.m. Visit www.domainnorthside.com for a full schedule of these free events.

3. Austin Postcard & Paper Show

Collectors of antique postcards and vintage paper can attend the event this weekend, sponsored by the Capital of Texas Postcard Club. The event takes place from noon-7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Frank Fickett Scout Center, 12500 N. I-35, Austin, located near Parmer Lane. Admission is $3. 4. Austin City Limits Music Festival         

The annual festival begins Friday with the second weekend taking place Oct. 7-9. The lineup for the annual festival includes Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar and LCD Soundsystem, among others. Attendees can purchase food and drinks at the ACL Eats Food Court, and visit an art market and a mini-fest for children. 5. Free volleyball play  

The free series begins Saturday at The Domain, 11301 Domain Drive, Austin, and will take place each Saturday in October from 6-8 p.m. The beach volleyball courts are open for children age 11 and older to play and compete with guidance from Project Serve staff. 6. Austin Fermentation Festival

The event is Sunday and celebrates fermentation in Central Texas, with activities such as workshops; fermented food, beverages and alcohol; a mini farmers market; and live music. The festival is presented by the Texas Farmers’ Market, and proceeds benefit TFM’s Farmer Emergency Fund. TFM operates markets at Lakeline Mall and the Mueller development.
