Oct. 23 was officially the busiest day on record at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The Monday following Formula 1 weekend saw 43,243 passengers screened through TSA, about 1,000 more than the previous record Oct. 24, 2022.

The breakdown

ABIA faced its busiest year ever in 2022 with a total passenger count of 21.1 million and 2.1 million in May, the year’s busiest month for the airport.

Over half of the airport’s busiest days ever were recorded in 2023 as the airport continues to add new flights and demand grows.

What’s next

The airport’s expansion and development program, Journey with AUS, which launched in 2021, consists of projects aimed at addressing passenger growth.

On Aug. 30, ABIA broke ground on its $164 million West Gate Expansion project, which will include three new boarding gates, extending the Barbara Jordan Terminal.

The South Terminal will be removed to make way for a new midfield concourse, a space where travelers will pass through the airport that will include a new tunnel connecting to the main terminal and new taxiways. The city settled a lawsuit for $88 million with the facility’s operator to secure the rights to demolish the terminal.

Other projects in the program include:
  • A new jet fuel storage facility
  • An upgraded baggage handling system
  • A new 90,000-square-foot air cargo facility
  • Improvements at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints
