1. Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive
At press time, the Texas Department of Transportation was waiting to receive clearance to begin the work on the project, which will reconstruct the bridges at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive and the frontage road bridge over Williamson Creek. U-turns will also be added at Stassney and William Cannon, and the main I-35 lanes will be widened.
• Timeline: spring 2016-winter 2019-20 • Cost: $79 million • Funding sources: state Proposition 1
2. Behind schedule: Frate Barker Road widening
The project will widen Frate Barker Road to a total of five lanes east of Hewitt Lane to Manchaca Road and a three-lane section from east of Brodie Lane to Hewitt. The entire project area will have bicycle lanes and sidewalks on each side of the road. Construction has not resumed after a utility relocation delay but is scheduled to continue in late March or early April.
• Timeline: February 2014-summer 2017 • Cost: about $7.5 million for construction • Funding sources: Travis County, Federal Highway Administration funds through TxDOT
3. On schedule: FM 1626 reconstruction in Travis County
A public hearing took place Jan. 14 to gain public feedback on the design for the project, which will rebuild FM 1626 from Brodie Lane to Manchaca Road, widening it from a two-lane road to a four-lane highway with a continuous center left-turn lane and shoulders, curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The on-schedule project is in the design phase. The environmental study is also pending completion. Once all public comments are received, the county can finish the design and start acquiring right of way.
• Timeline: August 2012-summer 2019 • Cost: $12 million • Funding sources: design funded by Travis County, construction funded by TxDOT
4. Loop 360 auxiliary lanes
Work began Feb. 1 on the project to add auxiliary lanes, or extended entrance/exit lanes, on Loop 360 to improve intersections with Walsh Tarlton Lane, the Barton Creek Square Mall entrance, Loop 1 and the intersection just south of Loop 1. A left-turn lane will also be added on the northbound frontage road of Loop 1 at Loop 360. Next steps include digging out the middle of Loop 360 and adding a northbound and southbound extended entrance/exit lanes from the northbound Loop 1 frontage road through Walsh Tarlton, as well as adding a triple left-turn from northbound Loop 1 to northbound 360.
• Timeline: February 2016-spring 2017 • Cost: $6.44 million • Funding sources: TxDOT
The project is currently in the final design phase and is not funded. The Mopac Intersections Environmental Study was completed Dec. 22 for improvements on Loop 1 at the intersections of Slaughter Lane and La Crosse Avenue to alleviate traffic congestion and increase safety. A diverging diamond intersection will be added at Slaughter, and a traditional diamond intersection will be added at La Crosse. An underpass will also be constructed allowing Loop 1 to go under Slaughter and La Crosse. The project is slated to go out to contractors for bids in 2019, but TxDOT is pursuing funds to put it out for bids sooner.[/caption]5. MoPac Intersections project
