The city of Georgetown’s Planning Department is moving to the historic Light and Water Works building at Eighth and Martin Luther King Jr. streets.
The department will close Dec. 30-31 for the move and will reopen in its new location on Jan. 4, according to a city news release.
The city’s Economic Development Department and some smaller departments, including the Public Communications Department, Main Street Program and Housing Department, moved into the building in November.
The Permitting and Inspections Department will remain at the Georgetown Municipal Complex, located at 300-1 Industrial Ave.
The Planning Department will use the east side entrance of the building with the address 406 W. Eighth St., and the other offices will use the building's west entrance with the address 809 MLK Jr. St., according to the news release.
The Light and Water Works building is part of the city’s Downtown West plan to create a civic center, which also includes converting the former library at 808 MLK Jr. St. into a new City Hall and renovating the city’s Communications and Technology Building at 510 W. Ninth St. as a new Municipal Court and Council Chamber.
City Council adopted the programming plan for Downtown West at its Dec. 8 meeting.
Design for the new City Hall and the Municipal Court and Council Chamber will be completed in the first half of 2016 and construction could begin in fall 2016, according to the news release.
The city is also constructing a 144-space parking lot at MLK Jr. and Eighth streets, which is expected to open soon, according to the news release.
