Time is nearly up for the public to weigh in on what Hays CISD’s newest school will be called. A school naming committee comprising members of the HCISD community has asked the public for nominations for what to call the district’s sixth middle school, which is set to be built in time for the 2016-17 school year. At 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 voting will be closed. Submissions may be made online via the HCISD website, or by writing to the district at Hays CISD Naming Committee, 21003 I-35, Kyle, TX 78640. The $29 million facility was approved by voters in a 2014 bond election. The district said the school will alleviate overcrowding at its other middle schools. Criteria for naming the school include historical or geographical references, subdivisions, state or national figures, significant contributors to the district, events or places, and land or money donors who paved the way for the facility. The naming committee is slated to whittle down the list of nominations at a meeting next week. The committee may also add new suggestions to the list. A decision will be made as early as December. The school’s mascot and colors have already been selected. After the district polled fifth- and seventh-graders likely to attend the school, a tiger was selected as the mascot, and royal blue and black were favored as the colors.
