As fall weather sets in, many local nonprofit organizations are working to ensure local families in need are well prepared for cooler temperatures this winter. Magnolia nonprofit organization Society of Samaritans is hosting its third annual winter drive and giveaway to benefit low-income children and adults in the area. Residents are asked to bring new or gently used coats, jackets, hoodies and sweaters to SOS offices during the month of November. Winter clothing donations will be accepted on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the SOS main office at 31355 Friendship Drive, Ste. 500, Magnolia, or on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the SOS Little Twig office at 603 Little Twig, Magnolia. This is the second coat drive for the nonprofit organization, SOS volunteer Frieda King said. “We had a blanket and bedding drive we did last year that was successful, and our first coat drive was a blast,” King said. “The kids loved getting coats and paraded around in the newfound coats that they chose.” While all types of clean coats are welcome, King said flexible clothing items that can be worn for a few years are needed most for children. “Because they grow a lot quicker, hoodies are very popular for kids and are very needed,” she said. New socks and new or gently used shoes for children and adults will also be accepted. The nonprofit organization will also host a donation giveaway event Dec. 5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the SOS Little Twig office. “Anybody in need can come and receive a coat, seniors or anybody,” King said. “It’s not only for people that sign up for donations. Whoever comes to the giveaway receives clothing, shoes and socks.“ Volunteers are also needed to help with the donations and giveaway.
